I hate yeast. Hate is a strong word but I feel strongly about this. I hate the kind of yeast that causes painful diaper rashes on my little guy's sensitive areas and that could lead to thrush...again. When Josiah was born he was given antibiotics because of the uterine infection I had developed. His cultures came back negative so he didn't really need the antibiotics but it was a precaution before we knew the results (which took 24hrs). Well antibiotics are great but they wipe out the good and the bad bacteria. So Josiah's GI tract was wiped clean and he developed a yeast diaper rash at 2 weeks. I know it is common for babies to develop yeasty diaper rashes, antibiotics or not but I do feel like it was the cause. Then he developed thrush which is a over population of yeast in the mouth and causes sores. My poor little 4 week old found it very painful to swallow :( He would cry because he was hungry, then cry because it hurt to eat, and then I would cry because I felt like I was failing as a mother. It made breastfeeding very painful for both of us. Once you have thrush it is very difficult to get rid of, we would passed it back and forth. Anything that touched his mouth or me was used once then it was tossed in the wash. We have dozens of burp cloths because of this. I would boil pacifiers and bottles for 20 minutes every night after he went to bed. He would get better go off the medicine then BAM it was back. Fast forward 10 weeks and we
finally got rid of it.
Or so I thought. It's been almost 3 weeks off medicine!
Today I went to urgent care because Josiah developed a diaper rash that seemed very painful. Doctor took one look and said "looks like yeast". I pretty sure the first thing I said was "shit" but I was yelling something much worse in my head.
Now it's back to the crazy cleaning routine. I'm praying it isn't a sign of the thrush coming back.
The picture below has nothing to do with evil yeast but I figured after a negative post I needed to end with something positive. At the Doctors he weighed 16.2 lbs so at least he is a growing boy!
aw, poor bud! i hope he's feeling better soon! it's funny because katie has her fingers in her mouth ALL the time, too!
ReplyDeleteI catch your blog from time to time and just read this. Surprisingly I was going through my first yeast infection a week ago, YUCK! Just wanted to mention I decided to not take antibiotics and rather air/sun my boobs and eat tons of Activia Yogurt (Which turned out to be pretty yummy). It is slowly working my breasts are feeling MUCH better in a matter of 3 days and my baby is much happier too.
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to give advice, in case you hadn't already tried that. Good luck with your breastfeeding journey, it's never easy, but always worth it! :D
